Original Photograph of Maj. John A. Mcfarlane Co. I 34th Virginia Cavalry Battalion, 1st Battalion, Virginia Mounted Rifles CSA

Maj. Mcfarlane served throughout the civil war as a confederate cavalry officer that commanded his own independent cavalry until he raised in the spring of 1862 called “Mcfarlane’s Squadron”. His unit bounced around multiple larger cavalry units during the war until ending up with the 34th Cavalry becoming Co. I within the 34th. He was elected commander of the unit by his men and was extremely liked by them. The 34th would fight across the Shenandoah valley and throughout Virginia during the civil war with the unit fielding over 100 cavalrymen at the battle of Gettysburg. After the war Mcfarlane would live a peaceful life in northern Virginia.
