1662 Netherlands City of Deventer Silver Ducat

This large silver ducat was minted in the Dutch city of Deventer in 1662. The front appears to have had either a weak or damaged die as 16 in 1662 appears to be deformed or lightly struck. The Ducat was the second largest coin minted in this period by the Dutch with the “Ducaton” being the largest. That being said this coin is still very large being wider in diameter than US silver dollars. This coin features an amazing image of a Knight holding a sword and a shield featuring the coat of arms of Deventer on it. On the reverse a shield featuring the coat of arms of the Dutch and a crown. Large silver ducats from the Netherlands are rare coins but one from Deventer is a much harder find as less of them are out there compared to others.
